Africa makes Olympic history: Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games officially underway

History was written on Saturday 31 October as the 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games officially opened at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, marking the first time an Olympic event has ever been hosted in Africa.

Before a cheering crowd, over 2,600 young athletes representing 205 delegations marched into the arena, creating vibrant tapestry of national and traditional attire.

The ceremony kicked off with a rich cultural spectacle celebrating African rhythm and heritage. Legendary Senegalese musician Baaba Maal led an opening parade alongside 360 dancers forming a map of the continent.

Following remarks by Dakar 2026 Organising Committee President Mamadou Diagna Ndiaye and IOC President Kirsty Coventry, Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially declared the Games open.

President Coventry said, “For years, we have talked about this moment. The first Olympic sporting event on African soil. And now – here we are! This historic moment is for Senegal and for Africa and for our entire Olympic family. To all of our amazing young athletes – are you ready for this? You are going to have the time of your lives, and I am so excited for you!”

“What makes these Games even more special is that young people have been at the heart of everything. Not just young athletes competing, but the young people of Senegal who have helped bring these Games to life. With your ideas, your creativity, your energy. These really are Games for the youth, by the youth. You have opened your arms and your hearts to the world. This is the spirit of Teranga,” she added, using the Wolof word for hospitality.

The culmination of the evening saw two rising Senegalese sport stars – fencer Abdourahmane Marième Sy and judoka Aïcha Diop – jointly light the Youth Olympic cauldron to a roar from the packed stadium.

Competition is now underway across all three host clusters, with events spanning traditional Olympic sports alongside street skateboarding, beach wrestling, futsal, and the Youth Olympic debut of wushu.

Sailing begins on 8 November with Men’s and Women’s Windsurfing in the coastal resort venue of Saly Beach.
