A Home Games

Behind the sports competition, behind the tough races and so many hours spent on boat works and training at the gym, sailors also have their life, families, parents, relatives and children.

Behind the sports competition, behind the tough races and so many hours spent on boat works and training at the gym, sailors also have their life, families, parents, relatives and children.

World Sailing caught up with Brazilian athletes Fernanda Oliveira and Jorge Zarif to find out what they feel approaching the first races of the sailing competition at Rio 2016 and who they dedicate their thoughts.

Beijing 2008 bronze medallist Fernanda Oliveira has campaigned in the Women’s 470 class after becoming a mother two and a half years ago. Far from leaving her baby Roberta at home during the Olympic cycle, she has traveled with her to all the regattas and spent all the nights with her.

Finn sailor Jorge Zarif’s thoughts fly away to his father, training mate and friend, who competed in the Finn class at the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games, and fought together with his son for the Beijing 2008 Brazilian selection shortly before passing away in 2009.

The Olympic sailing story is also made of the people supporting our athletes.
