Video - Barnett and Merton on the ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao

The ISAF Sailing World Cup Qingdao will see the Asian nations fighting it out for Men’s 470 Olympic qualification places, but it also presents an opportunity for the young guns of New Zealand to test themselves against a strong field.

Sam Barnett and Zak Merton come to Qingdao for their first World Cup event and are looking to put in to practice what they have been learning back at home in New Zealand against a strong and focussed Asian fleet of competitors.

Barnett said, “Everyone here from Asia will be trying to peak for this event so the level will be real high with a real high intensity and it will be really good for our racing.”

Merton added, “It gives us a chance to sit back and watch that a bit, focus on our own racing and hopefully have a good one.”

Barnett and Merton are aiming to make the most of the opportunity and fly the flag for New Zealand in Qingdao.

“We’re most looking forward to comparing ourselves against the really good people in the fleet and see if the stuff we have learnt since the Europeans in June, see if we can put it in to practice well,” said Barnett.

ISAF Sailing World Cup
The ISAF Sailing World Cup is a world-class annual series for Olympic sailing. It is open to the sailing events chosen for the 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition. Its centre piece is the ISAF Sailing World Cup Final in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

The 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup will consist of five regattas for all ten Olympic events and where possible, Formula Kite Racing. Qualification places for the ISAF Sailing World Cup final are up for grabs at each event. The final will bring together the top 20 boats in each Olympic event and an Open Kiteboarding event where the World Cup Champions will be crowned
