Equipment and Adaptations

Para Sailing is one of very few sports where Para and able-bodied athletes can compete on a level playing field.

Over the last five years, World Sailing has seen a 30% rise in the number of nations participating in international Para Sailing competitions thanks to a major focus on increasing accessibility and adaptations to allow people with varying physical capabilities to operate boats using different techniques.

A highly economical formula for designing, developing, and installing adaptive equipment means Para Sailing athletes can compete at all event levels using their nation’s existing fleet.

The adaptations include extra rope loops for grip and form handles, extensions to sail sheets, onboard transfer benches and non-slip seats, and stripping out obstructions in and around boats.

Technology is also playing a major role in the growth of Para Sailing!

The development of revolutionary sip puff technology enables sailors to control boats entirely by breath, while “plug and play” joystick-controlled electronic consoles for steering, control lines, and main sheets also greatly enhance opportunities for parasailing participation.

Boats & Adaptations designed for Para Sailors

Our athletes compete with a total of nine classes of boat. Three of these classes are currently selected for the Paralympic Games pathway and qualifying international events: 2.4mR (single person), RS Venture Connect (two-person) and Hansa 303 (single person). There are an increasing number of boats designed specifically for people with disabilities to ensure gender equity across the class, and most other boats can be made suitable with some modifications. Adaptions can include seats, transfer benches, steering assists and electronics. for further information.
