What is Steering the Course?

Find out about Steering the Course and how it works!

Welcome to Steering the Course!

Sailing is one of the most inclusive sports there is, and can be enjoyed by anyone, whether choosing to sail as a recreational hobby or compete at the highest level. Here at World Sailing, we are always striving to make our sport accessible to all, regardless of age, gender or ability.

Steering the Course is a global initiative to bring together sailing communities, highlighting the achievements of women already within the sport, as well as attracting those who have never tried it before.

We hosted our first festival in 2021 and have continued to develop from there.

Who is Steering the Course for?

Steering the Course is open to everyone! From individual clubs and sailing centres, to our Member National Authorities and Special Events, Steering the Course is open to everyone to get involved in and take part.

We encourage those taking part to host an activity if possible or begin a conversation to encourage more people to take part in sailing. Some suggestions include:

  • Taster Sessions: Fun sessions to get new participants involved in the sport.
  • Learn to Sail Courses: For girls and women.
  • Women’s Race Day / Event: Women only.
  • Race Day: Involve female race officials, using a group of all-female race officials where possible, or invite new interested females to shadow current race officials.
  • Women at the Helm: For either training exercises or races, women must be helm.
  • Bring a friend along: Encourage active participations to bring a friend or family member along to try out the sport they love.
  • Be an Instructor or Coach for the Day: Current youth sailors could work with instructors or coaches for the day (possibly even assisting delivering the taster sessions) for an in-depth insight into these roles.
  • Information sessions.

As well as many other activities including Question and Answer sessions, virtual events and eSailing. The program is completely open for Clubs and Centres to operate whichever activity they choose.

How does the festival run?

Each year we have two festivals where we encourage anyone to run activities and programs for women and girls. There is usually one festival at the end of May and one at the beginning of October, but check this year’s page for the exact dates.

Alongside this, World Sailing runs activation focusing on specific topics and projects. We will also share your activities on our social media channels.
