Technical Courses for Coaches

World Sailing Technical Courses for Coaches are designed to equip coaches with the in-depth knowledge and practical skills necessary to excel in their roles. We offer a structured learning pathway across three distinct levels, each building upon the foundational knowledge from the previous level.

How To Organise a Course?

To support Member National Authorities (MNAs) in effectively delivering Technical Courses for Coaches, we developed a comprehensive Organisational Guidebook. This valuable resource provides guidance on course details, funding options, logistical planning and participant selection.

Course Information

Whether you are developing new coaching pathways or strengthening existing ones, our structured series of technical courses offers MNAs a clear framework to support coach education at every stage: from entry-level instructors to high-performance coaches.

Each course is delivered by World Sailing-appointed Coach Developers and includes practical, on-the-water training alongside classroom sessions.

Level 1: Sailing Instructor

Build the foundations. Inspire the next generation.
This 7-day course is ideal for confident sailors who want to teach others how to sail in a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment. Participants will develop leadership and instructional techniques, practical on-water teaching skills and risk management strategies, equipping them to lead Learn-to-Sail programmes and manage instructional teams.

Level 2: Club Race Coach (Effective Coaching)

Transform sailors into racers. Create lifelong competitors.
Aimed at aspiring race coaches, this 7-day course focuses on developing effective coaching practices that foster racing competency. Learn how to plan and deliver structured race training, coach key racing skills (speed, tactics, strategy), and support sailors both in training and at regattas, all while cultivating a positive, growth-oriented culture.

Level 3: Performance Coach (Developing Coaching Expertise)

This 5-day advanced course is designed for coaches working with sailors transitioning into high-performance competition. They will gain the skills to design periodised training programmes, support athlete development holistically (technical, physical and mental) and lead in competitive environments with sailor-centred strategies.
