Olympic qualification on the line as 2026 Asian Games Sailing Regatta gets underway
The sailing competition at the 2026 Asian Games officially commenced on Saturday 26 September at Gamagori Yaiyoh Yacht Harbour, bringing together 146 athletes in 111 boats from 22 nations and across 14 classes, signifying the impressive growth of sailing in Asia and the importance of this year’s Asian Games.
Beyond the battle for honours, the regatta carries extra significance as a major continental Olympic qualification event in the Men’s and Women’s Dinghy fleets as competitors fight for an early advantage on the road to LA28.
World Sailing President Quanhai Li highlighted the importance of the event and the strength of the competing fleet in Japan. He said, “The 2026 Asian Games celebrate some of our most talented athletes and represent a big step forward in our mission to grow our sport globally. With 146 athletes from 22 countries, it is clear sailing values its place in the Asian Games and we can look forward to some exciting competition.”
Elite sailors from across the region have gathered at the marina, ready to compete in exciting conditions. With Olympic aspirations on the line from day one, the tension and anticipation throughout the boat park reflect the high stakes of this year’s competition.
