Para Sailing Classification update presented to World Sailing Council
At a meeting held on Wednesday 9 September 2026, the World Sailing Council received an update on the implementation of the Para Sailing Classification Rules to bring the sport in line with the International Paralympic Committee Classification Code.
The planned changes are a comprehensive update to the current rules which will expand and enhance the opportunities available within the sport. Council voted unanimously to endorse the implementation process.
The rules are due to come into effect for competition next year following formal approval by Council.
The World Sailing Council was also given the opportunity to discuss the World Sailing Neutrality Policy, following International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommendations, ahead of a vote to be held at a future meeting.
The changes to the policy, which governs the eligibility of Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) in World Sailing competitions, proposes that sanctions on all athletes from Russia and Belarus are lifted at all levels, as proposed by the IOC. The final decision will be voted on at the World Sailing General Assembly in November.
Council also heard updates on the Regulation 11.5 review of Olympic events, and recommendations from the Equipment Committee on the LA28 Olympic Games qualification system.
Submissions related to Class Agreements and Association Status were also heard.
