In Memoriam: John Ruf

Born in Pewaukee, Wisconsin, John’s lifelong love affair with the water began in his youth, learning to helm X-boats under the guidance of his mother and grandfather before progressing to M-16 Scows and E-Scows. 

His early life was punctuated by immense physical challenges, including extensive hospital stays following the discovery of a spinal tumour, yet his passion for sailing remained completely unwavering through every trial. 

Following a life-altering car accident that necessitated the use of a wheelchair, John refused to let his circumstances tether him to the shore. Whilst recuperating, he discovered the 2.4mR singlehanded class flipping through a sailing magazine, a discovery that would reshape his competitive career.  

Embracing the unique discipline of solo sailing, a stark contrast to his previous experience relying on a crew for tactics and sail trimming, he made his debut at the 2000 United States Paralympic Team Trials, a baptism of fire that ignited a formidable international career. 

John’s grit and exceptional skill culminated in his selection for the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, where he secured a brilliant bronze medal in the one-person keelboat event in Qingdao.  

He followed this spectacular achievement just a year later by capturing the gold medal at the 2009 2.4mR World Championships in Fort Myers, Florida, officially cementing his status as the finest solo sailor in the world.  

Away from the international regatta circuits, John channelled his sharp intellect into a career as an attorney in Wisconsin, whilst remaining a deeply valued member of the Pewaukee Yacht Club and a dedicated regular at the Milwaukee Community Sailing Centre.  

His legacy remains a profound testament to the triumph of the human spirit over adversity, and he will be sorely missed by the international sailing community.
