Future Match Racing stars ready for World Championship in Denmark

For the second time in just three years, Middelfart will become a centre of world-class sailing as the next generation of match racing talent competes for one of the most prestigious titles in youth sailing.

The championship is organized by GoSail in cooperation with Middelfart Sailing Club, the Danish Sailing Federation, World Sailing, Sport Event Denmark, Middelfart Municipality and Destination Fyn.

The event also marks the return of Bunker One as title sponsor. The global bunker and energy company, headquartered in Middelfart, previously supported two back-to-back World Championships hosted by GoSail in 2023: the Melges 24 World Championship and the Women’s Match Racing World Championship.

The Future of Match Racing

Youth Match Racing Worlds 2026 will bring together some of the world’s most talented young match racers for five days of intense one-on-one competition.

Denmark will be represented by two teams led by Mathias Rossing and Victor Melchior from the Royal Danish Yacht Club (KDY), both aiming to challenge the international fleet on home waters.

Match racing is often described as sailing’s equivalent of a boxing match: two boats, one course and countless tactical decisions where every manoeuvre matters. The format rewards boat handling, tactical awareness, teamwork and mental strength, making it one of the purest tests in competitive sailing.

Many of the world’s leading professional sailors have built their careers through match racing, and the Youth World Championship has long been regarded as a stepping stone toward elite international competition.

“This event is about much more than a World Championship title. It is about identifying and developing the future stars of our sport,” says Søren Mathiesen Laugesen, CEO of GoSail and Event Director.

“Many of tomorrow’s Olympic sailors, America’s Cup sailors and professional racing sailors are competing here. We are looking forward to welcoming some of the most talented young sailors in the world to Middelfart.”

Spectator-Friendly racing just metres from shore

The championship will be sailed directly in front of the newly renovated Middelfart Marina, providing exceptional viewing opportunities for spectators.

The racing area is located only a few metres from the waterfront, allowing visitors to follow the pre-start duels, close tactical battles and decisive manoeuvres from shore.

Unlike many sailing disciplines, match racing offers an easy-to-follow format where spectators can quickly identify the winner and loser of each race.

“One of the unique qualities of match racing is how spectator-friendly it is,” says Søren Mathiesen Laugesen.

“The boats are close to shore, the action is easy to understand and the tactical battles unfold right in front of the audience. It creates an atmosphere more similar to a stadium sport than traditional sailing.”

Showcasing Middelfart and the Little Belt to the World

For the organisers and partners, the championship is about more than sailing. The event provides a unique opportunity to showcase Middelfart, the Little Belt and the island of Funen to sailors, officials, families and international media from around the world.

Over recent years, Middelfart has established itself as one of Denmark’s leading hosts of international sailing events, combining world-class sailing conditions with strong local support and a spectacular waterfront setting.

Strong partnership behind the Championship

The Youth Match Racing Worlds 2026 is the result of close cooperation between GoSail, World Sailing, the Danish Sailing Federation, Sport Event Denmark, Middelfart Municipality, Destination Fyn and a number of public and private partners.

“Denmark has a strong tradition of hosting world-class international sporting events, and Middelfart is a perfect example of how local communities, volunteers and strong partnerships can create the framework for outstanding sporting experiences,” says Lars Lundov, CEO of Sport Event Denmark.

Mayor Anders Møllegård of Middelfart Municipality welcomes the opportunity to host another World Championship:

“The championship will bring life to the marina, activity to the city and international attention to Middelfart. At the same time, it gives both residents and visitors the opportunity to experience elite sport right on their doorstep.”

Destination Fyn also sees significant long-term potential in the event.

“The Youth Match Racing World Championship adds another important chapter to Middelfart’s impressive sailing event history. We hope this championship will pave the way for even more international sailing events in the years to come,” says Jakob Staun, Head of Events and Sustainability at Destination Fyn.

The first races will begin on 22 June, with the World Champions crowned on 25 June. All racing can be followed free of charge from the waterfront at Middelfart Marina.
