World Sailing supports the development of the next generation of Latvian sailors
World Sailing recently wrapped up two training courses in Riga, Latvia, designed to support the long-term development of the sport and help to guide the next generation of sailors, coaches and race officials.
The first, a Technical Course for Coaches Level 2 course held at Sailing club 360, Latvian National Sports Centre “Mežaparks” in Riga, in September, and featured 15 participants (six female, nine male).
Funded by Olympic Solidarity and run by World Sailing Coach Developer Tim Cross, participants took the next step in their journey to become effective coaches.

Aimed at aspiring race coaches, the course focuses on developing effective coaching practices that foster racing competency and help participants to plan and deliver structured race training, coach key racing skills – speed, tactics, and strategy – and support sailors both in training and at regattas, all while cultivating a positive, growth-oriented culture.
Tim Cross said, “The coaches clearly had a passion for developing and growing racing participation across the national club network. There was plenty of enthusiasm to refine their and enhance their coaching practice. The Technical course provided the opportunity for coaches to work together to raise the standard of coaching across the national network of sailing, windsurf and kite boarding clubs.”

This was followed recently by a Race Officer Level 1 course at Riga Technical University, where 10 participants (two female, eight male) completed the course, funded by World Sailing under the new National Race Officer Programme and run by International Race Officer Miguel Amaral.
Dace Dumbere-Bregže, General Secretary at the Latvian Sailing Union, said, “The courses were conducted at a very high standard — well structured, engaging, and practical. Both lecturers did an excellent job delivering the content clearly and professionally. We have received very positive feedback from participants who especially appreciated the balance between theory and hands-on practice. Importantly, the lecturer successfully adapted the content to suit participants working with dinghy, kite, and windsurfing classes alike.
“These programs are essential for strengthening the foundation of our national sailing structure. By developing both race management and coaching competencies, we are ensuring that Latvian sailing continues to grow with well-prepared officials and coaches who can guide the next generation of sailors with professionalism, safety, and passion.”

The Race Officer Level 1 course is part of World Sailing’s National Race Officer Programme, tied to the World Sailing Academy. To participate in the Level 1 Course, participants must pass the online Fundamental Race Management Course, which provides the necessary background knowledge for the practical elements included in Level 1 in-person.

The online Fundamental Race Management Course and Level 1 Course are both available in English, French and Spanish, and can be translated into additional languages if required.
