The SKUD 18 International Match Race Challenge - A new chapter for a Paralympic legend
The SKUD 18 has a proud legacy. Once a Paralympic class, this high-performance two-person keelboat has delivered unforgettable racing moments and showcased what true teamwork, adaptability, and determination look like on the water.
Today, that same spirit continues to drive sailors around the world – even as fleets have become smaller and boats more widely dispersed.
Recognising the need to keep the SKUD 18 class alive and thriving, a passionate group of organisers in New Zealand asked a simple question: how can we make world-class SKUD racing possible when boats are few and far between?
Their answer is both creative and bold: match racing.
This format brings SKUDs back to their competitive roots – fast, tactical, and full of adrenaline. One-on-one duels, short intense races, and shared equipment mean sailors can fly in, step straight into a boat, and get racing. Crews can even be arranged locally, removing the barriers that often stand in the way of participation.
And where better to launch this new chapter than Auckland, the City of Sails and home of The America’s Cup. Timed just after SailGP races on the same waters, competitors will have the incredible opportunity to test their skills on the very same course as the world’s top professional sailors.
“Our goal is to open the door to high-level racing for sailors with a disability, wherever they are in the world. The match racing format captures the intensity and excitement of sailing at its best – without the barriers of moving fleets, crews, and support teams across the world,” said Paul Wager, Sailability Auckland.

With the Paralympic Games heading to Brisbane 2032, the timing couldn’t be more perfect. This event embodies the momentum and optimism building around Para Inclusive Sailing’s global resurgence – proving that innovation and passion can keep a class alive and open new pathways for the next generation of athletes.
Looking ahead, there’s already talk of expanding this concept into a full international match racing series, connecting SKUD sailors from every corner of the world.
