Winners crowned at Dutch Water Week

The Dutch Water Week concluded today with the pilot finals of the Sailing Grand Slam (SGS). The decisive races in the four participating Olympic disciplines were held on the Weerwater, right in the center of Almere.

The Sailing Grand Slam is a collaboration of five major international sailing, surfing, and kitesurfing events across ten Olympic disciplines. This year, Almere experimented with alternative courses and a different scoring system for the finals.

ILCA 6

In the ILCA 6 there was a Dutch woman on the podium: Roos Wind took the bronze. The win went to Agata Barwinska (POL), while Line Flem Høst (NOR) finished fifth.

ILCA 7

In the ILCA7, the victory went to Finn Lynch (IRL). The best Dutchman was Duco Bos in sixth place. World champion Willem Wiersema finished seventh.

iQFOiL

In the IQFOiL men’s event, Yoav Omer (ISR) surprisingly took the title. Johan Søe (DEN) came second. Joost Vink (NED) finished third and also took a podium spot, while Max Castelein (5th) and Kiran Badloe (6th) reached the final.

Badloe was also happy with the course: “The course X with a gate above and below is fun. It keeps the field close together and gives a lot of options. We learned something new this week. I also propose that the Sailing Grand Slam and the IQFoil class organization work together even more closely to see how we can go forward.”

On to the future

The experiments in Almere made it clear that there’s still work to be done, but also that everyone is eager to advance the sport. As Englishman Beckett said earlier this week: “It’s good that we’re testing this… this is the only way to make the sport more accessible and stronger.”

With the insights gained, the organisers can now further develop a permanent season finale for the Sailing Grand Slam.
