Clagett Sailing wraps up 23rd Annual Regatta in Newport with inspiration, growth, and world-class racing

The 23rd C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Memorial Clinic and Regatta concluded in Newport, Rhode Island, on 22 June, welcoming 30 sailors with disabilities for five action-packed days of learning, competition, and camaraderie.

Hosted by Clagett Sailing, the event combined a two-day coaching clinic with three days of racing in the 2.4mR and Martin 16 classes – continuing the legacy of one of the world’s most respected para sailing development regattas.

Despite varied conditions – from gusts over 30 knots on day one to classic Newport “champagne sailing” – sailors rose to the challenge, showcasing determination, sportsmanship, and the power of inclusive sport.

The 2.4mR fleet saw 14 sailors from the USA, Canada, and Puerto Rico compete across nine races. The class was headlined by Chuck Allen of Rhode Island, who clinched the top spot and the coveted C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Trophy. Allen, a 2024 Clagett Boat Grant recipient, will be heading to the 2.4mR World Championships in Italy this October as part of Team Clagett.

Joining him on the podium were Siobhan MacDonald (Canada) and Steve Gilbert (USA), both delivering strong and consistent performances. MacDonald, also a Clagett Boat Grant recipient, reflected on her journey since first attending in 2013: “It’s been a long journey of challenges with boats and results, but I’m proud to sail at a regatta like this and perform consistently at the top of the fleet.”

The Martin 16 fleet brought seven boats to the line, including a standout performance from Tracy Schmitt (Canada) and Dan Scher (USA). Schmitt, returning to Clagett after a 10-year hiatus, teamed up with Scher to secure the gold. When Schmitt had to return home mid-regatta, Scher stepped into the helm, guided by her previous coaching.

“It was my first time steering a Martin 16 in a regatta. I could hear Tracy’s guidance as I raced — it meant a lot,” said Scher.

Michael Lung and Randall Emry (Hawaii) took silver, with Eli Workman and Cindy Walker earning bronze after a tight battle on the water.

Clagett Sailing once again recognised excellence beyond results, presenting several key awards:

  • C. Thomas Clagett, Jr. Trophy – Chuck Allen
  • Susan B. Johnson Sportsmanship Award – Jordan Gratton
  • Larry Gadsby Most Improved Award – Peter Norwood
  • Nick Scandone Spirit Award – Siobhan MacDonald
  • Robie Pierce & Gene Hinkle Seamanship Award – Delani Hulme-Lawrence

Clagett Sailing President and Co-Founder Stephanie McLennan shared heartfelt words at the close of the event:

“I’m incredibly proud to continue the work my mother and I began 23 years ago in honour of my grandfather. None of this is possible without our outstanding volunteers, sponsors, coaches, race committee, and of course, the sailors. Clagett Sailing is more than a regatta – it’s a movement rooted in opportunity, community, and reaching for success.”

As Clagett Sailing continues to expand its impact – from grassroots clinics to the global stage – the spirit of its mission remains unchanged: providing sailors with disabilities the knowledge, tools, and opportunities to grow, compete, and thrive.
