The international sailing community is mourning the loss of John Outhwaite who passed away recently.
John was best known for his work with the SB20, J/70 and Dragon classes – amongst many others – where he sailed and served as Class Chief Measurer over a period of more than 20 years.
He was kind, generous, helpful and charming, with a cheeky smile and a sharp wit. Former crewmate Ian Turnbull describes John as ‘one of our best’ and says, ‘we all owe him a debt of gratitude.’
He loved sailing and being out on the water and wanted to share that passion – particularly with younger sailors, but in addition to being a great competitor, John was also a top-level international measurer.
His contribution to the sport has been immense and he will be sorely missed by everyone at World Sailing, everyone he worked with and everyone he sailed with.
