Allianz Sailing World Championships 2023: Ones to Watch - ILCA 6

Having a baby is a life-changing experience, so Marit Bouwmeester’s (NED) rapid return to the top of the ILCA 6 singlehanded fleet is nothing short of remarkable.

With silver, gold and bronze from the last three Olympic regattas, the Dutch sailor is already one of the most successful female sailors of all time, but becoming a mother for the first time has done nothing to dull her competitive instincts and relentless drive for perfection.

Since giving birth to daughter Jessie last summer, Bouwmeester has worked hard to be at her very best again and already in 2023 has won gold at the European Championships, the Princess Sofia Trophy and the Paris 2024 Test Event in Marseille.

The reigning Olympic champion from Tokyo 2020, Anne Marie Rindom (DEN) remains a potent force in the fleet, along with Emma Plasschaert (BEL) who got married earlier this year to top ILCA 7 competitor from Australia, Matt Wearn.

Sarah Douglas (CAN) offers Canada its first serious hope of an Olympic medal in many years, having won the Princess Sofia Trophy in 2022, Hyeres Olympic Week in 2023 and recently finishing fifth in Marseille.
