Tragic loss of Olympic sailor Eya Guezguez

World Sailing is devastated to learn of the death of Eya Guezguez on Sunday 10 April 2022, whilst training with her sister Sarra on her 49erFX.

Eya and Sarra represented Tunisia in the 49erFX at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. At the age of 16 years and 137 days, the pair were the youngest female sailors to compete in the Games, and were also the youngest Olympians to represent Tunisia. Eya and Sarra came 21st and were seen as strong contenders themselves, and an inspiration to other female sailors, hoping to race at the Paris Olympic Games in 2024.

Quanhai Li, President of World Sailing said, “On behalf of my Board of Directors, and the wider sailing community, I’d like to express my heartfelt sadness at this news, and offer my condolences to Sarra, Eya’s family and the wider Tunisian sailing community at this incredibly difficult time. Eya was a very talented sailor with a promising pathway ahead of her to continue competing at the very top levels of the sport. She was an inspiration to young athletes around the world and will be greatly missed by many.”
