206 boats from across the globe competed for the RS Aero World Championships at the 2012 Olympic venue, WPNSA in Weymouth.
This was the young RS Aero Class’s second Worlds and underlines its exceptional international growth since launch only four years ago.
Conditions ranged from 8 knots to seriously windy, with gusts into the high 30s at the climax of the final race. All credit to the sailors and the equipment with, once again, no spars were broken nor any other significant damage to the boats throughout the full-on event. Most medals were decided during the last race of the series.
It’s hard to find another class that has held a 200-boat world championship within four years of launch and the sailor’s enthusiasm is infectious. The next World Championship is scheduled for December 2019 at Port Stephens, NSW, Australia – 2 hours north of Sydney. A large charter fleet will be provided but, with demand expected to be high, keen competitors should move quickly as soon as the booking system opens.
The RS Aero Worlds were run as part of the massive RS Games regatta and, with the RS Tera Worlds held at the same time a number of families were represented in both classes.
This event celebrates almost 25 years of RS sailing and, indeed, some sailors have made the most of the festival atmosphere and gone on to compete in further RS classes as the event rolls forward.
