Para-Classification Seminar to be held ahead of 2018 Para Worlds

In order to strengthen World Sailing's pool of National Classifiers, a training seminar for future classifiers will be held at the 2018 Para World Sailing Championships in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA from 15-17 September 2018.

In order to strengthen World Sailing’s pool of National Classifiers, a training seminar for future classifiers will be held at the 2018 Para World Sailing Championships in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA from 15-17 September 2018.

The course will include theoretical training on:

  • World Sailing Para-Classification Rules
  • IPC Classification Code
  • World Anti-Doping Agency Regulations
  • Para World Sailing Regulations in the World Sailing Race Management Manual

 
Trainees will also receive considerable practical training of sailing classification under the guidance of the International Classifiers at the Para Worlds.
 
Depending on the weather, the candidates may get a further opportunity to observe the sailors in racing conditions on water.
 
Candidates interested in participating must be qualified Medical Doctors or Physiotherapists; other allied health professionals may be accepted upon request.
 
Successful trainees will have acquired the necessary skills to classify athletes in their respective countries and will have fulfilled the first step in the progression towards becoming an International Classifier in the future.
 
At an event an International Classifier will:
 

  • classifies sailors according to the current PWS Functional Classification Manual. This includes medical, anatomical, and physiological analysis of the sailor’s capabilities, performance assessment through standardized tests and observation on the water during competition;
  • advises on, inspects and approves assistive devices used by sailors during competition;
  • manages Classification protest hearings to resolve disputes about a sailor’s classification;
  • informs the Race Committee if a sailor or team is ineligible to compete.
