What a difference a day makes at Kieler Woche (Kiel Week) sailing festival. On the opening day (Wednesday 21 June) of the Para World Sailing Championships in Kiel, Germany the Schilksee Olympic Centre was bathed in sunshine.

On day two (Thursday 22 June) the sun has been replaced by grey, overcast skies and drizzle. However, sailors’ spirits won’t be dampened as a southerly breeze will build from 10:00 local time, reaching 12 knots gusting 19 just in time for the start of racing.

Each fleet will sail a further two races. The Men’s and Women’s Hansa 303 will commence at 12:00 local time and the 2.4 Norlin OD will start at 13:30.

Heading into the second day of racing, Christopher Symonds (AUS) holds the Men’s Hansa 303 lead after two victories ahead of Polish Rio 2016 Paralympian Piotr Cichocki.

France’s Magali Moraines and Spain’s Violeta del Reino were locked on four points immediately after racing on Wednesday. However, del Reino received a discretionary after racing and is now two points off Moraines.

By his own admission, Daniel Bina (CZE) was the surprise package in the Open 2.4 Norlin OD on the opening day and a first and a third gave him the lead. After racing on Wednesday, he said, “I am really pleased because I never sail like that. My results are usually just in the top ten.”

Sydney 2000 Paralympic gold medallist Heiko Kroger (GER) and Athens 2004 and Rio 2016 gold medallist Damien Seguin (FRA) follow.

Further information on how to follow the week of racing is available below.
