Singapore hosted the fourth of five 2016 Emerging Nations Program (ENP) clinics for the Asia and Oceania region from 20 – 25 August 2016 ahead of the upcoming 2016 Aon Youth Sailing World Championships in Auckland, New Zealand on 14 – 20 December.

The ENP attempts to try and narrow the performance gap and promote worldwide competition and to increase the number of sailors from emerging MNAs participating at the Youth Worlds.

In Singapore, participants were trained by a team of three Regional Development Coordinators from World Sailing together with guest trainers, sports scientist from the National Youth Sports Institute (NYSI) in sailing-specific knowledge of nutrition, psychology and physiology. This provided a unique and applicable knowledge for the sailors and coaches.

A total of 26 sailors and coaches from Chinese Taipei, Fiji, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Samoa and Vietnam attended the Singapore ENP clinic. Four of the participants will also make the trip to New Zealand to represent their country at the Youth Worlds with World Sailing scholarships from the clinic. They are:
Hsiu-Chu Huang (TPE)
Azri Azman (MAS)
Nurul Rahma Ledha (INA)
Hao Shuang Wang (TPE).

Talking about the clinic and what she had learned, 15-year-old Nurul Hanis Binte Mohamed Razali (MAS) said, “I have learnt a lot of things that I did not know previously, this program allowed me to meet new people, form more friendships and learn from different cultures. I hope to be able to sail more in the future after knowing what I learnt here.”

Speaking on the final day of the clinic, Andrew Clouston, World Sailing Nominated Expert said, “It has been a really successful course over the last few days, the ability of the sailors has really jumped up from when we started till today when we finished our last race. We have also been able to train the coaches which will allow the transferring of knowledge back in their home nation.”

The final clinic will take place in Auckland, New Zealand on 11-13 December, just days before the city hosts the 2016 Aon Youth World Championships and will be the culmination of the 2016 ENP clinics.
