Germany’s Heiko Kroeger won the first Paralympic sailing gold medal when it was introduced to the Sydney 2000 Games as a fully integrated event. It was previously in Atlanta 1996 as an exhibition.

Talking about his Sydney 2000 experience Kroeger said, “The people there were so focussed on the sport and it was a great adventure for me. An amazing feeling.”

Kroeger would have to wait until London 2012 to add to his Paralympic medal tally when he picked up a silver, but he heads in to Rio 2016 as current world champion, so another gold is not beyond the vastly experienced German.

The Rio 2016 Paralympic Games will take place between 7-18 September in Rio de Janeiro and the sailing is scheduled to be raced between 12-17 September in Guanabara Bay.
