Sacrifices made at Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland

Most athletes at the top level of sport have to make sacrifices. Whether it's time away from family, being away from home or skipping that dessert after a meal to keep down to an optimum weight.

Most athletes at the top level of sport have to make sacrifices. Whether it’s time away from family, being away from home or skipping that dessert after a meal to keep down to an optimum weight.

While these sacrifices are choices rather than absolute necessity, there is one person at the Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland who has had to sacrifice a sacrifice for his love of sailing.

Bahrain’s Abdulla Janahi is sailing in the Laser at the Sailing World Cup event, but it has come at a time when his religious beliefs come to the fore and his fellow Muslims are making their own sacrifice. The Sailing World Cup falls within Ramadan.

Explaining simply what this religious observation is, Janahi said, “Ramadan is a month every year when we [Muslims] fast from when the sun comes up to the sun goes down. It’s a month when people pray more and give money to the poor.”

Regarded as one of the Five Pillars of Islam, Ramadan is a religious observation known to many, whether Muslim or not. Millions of Muslims around the world participate in fasting but for the many Muslim sports people this is something that has to be put on hold.

For Janahi, being a sportsman means that he does not observe Ramadan at the same time as others, but it doesn’t mean he doesn’t observe it at all, “I don’t do it at the moment because I do sport. It’s a sacrifice we have to make as athletes as we are out on the water, training hard and we need to keep our nutrition up. We usually do it after this month when we have time in our schedule.”

For now, his focus is turned to the job in hand, the Sailing World Cup. Although Janahi has been sailing for some time, this will be his debut at a Sailing World Cup event, “It’s really nice to sail against top sailors. I’m just going to enjoy the racing. I don’t put any expectations on myself so I will just see what happens.”

Having sailed in other regattas before, the World Cup offers Janahi something different to what he has previously experienced. “There is no qualifying,” he exclaimed. “I just get to sail against the best sailors straight away.”

Janahi will make the most of the experience throughout the week and with the likes of two-time World Champion Nick Thompson (GBR), Australian Rio 2016 sailor Tom Burton (AUS) and World #1 Matt Wearn (AUS) in the fleet he’ll get the chance to test against the best.
