Stalheim and Bouwmeester take European titles

Sweden's Jesper Stalheim and the Netherlands' Marit Bouwmeester will head into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as European Champions in the Laser and Laser Radial following victory in Gran Canaria, Spain.

Sweden’s Jesper Stalheim and the Netherlands’ Marit Bouwmeester will head into the Rio 2016 Olympic Games as European Champions in the Laser and Laser Radial following victory in Gran Canaria, Spain.

Held out of Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, the European Laser Championships concluded on Friday with 12 races conducted in a range of conditions. From big wind and waves to light breeze, it had it all.

The last day of the championship offered sailors amazing conditions, with 8-12 knots and a typical long wave from the Atlantic.

Stalheim came out on top in the Laser followed by Korea’s Jeemin Ha, who took silver in the open competition. Norway’s Kristian Ruth took the European silver medal and open bronze with Giovanni Coccouluto picking up the European bronze medal.

In the Laser Radial, Bouwmeester was followed by Sweden’s Josefin Olsson and Finland’s Tuula Tenkanen.

Poland’s Marcin Rudawki came out on top in the Men’s Laser Radial whilst Canary Islander Ismael Iess won the Laser Radial Under 21 title.

The event was organized by the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria, the European Laser Class Association (Eurilca) and the Royal Spanish Sailing Association.
