The first Technical Course for Coaches of 2016 took place in Cyprus, with the help of IOC Olympic Solidarity funding and the Cyprus Sailing Federation (CYSAF).

The aim of a Level 1 Technical Course is to teach coaches how to introduce the fundamental skills required for non sailors to be able to take part in their first experience on the water. Course candidates are competent sailors who wish to pass on their passion, knowledge and practical experiences to anyone wishing to take part in the sport of sailing. This course covers the skills required to deliver entry level participation oriented practical and theoretical sessions and includes the development of skills required to turn novices into independent sailors.

World Sailing Nominated Expert, Rob Holden (RSA) delivered the six day course to 19 coaches in Larnaca, Cyprus. Holden said, “This was a very successful course that ran very smoothly.. The participants are active coaches and are of a high level with a fantastic attitude to innovative learning. They were eager to understand coaching from a different aspect.”

Elena Papazoglou, Technical Advisor for CYSAF and member of the World Sailing Development and Youth Committee worked with her National Olympic Committee and IOC Olympic Solidarity to secure funding for the course. World Sailing Member National Authorities (MNA) can make similar applications to get courses like this one funded by working with the Training and Development department. Click here to get in touch.

Both Elena and Rob both completed the World Sailing Training Scholarship and are using their knowledge and expertise to help develop the sport of sailing.

The Scholarship is a seven week programme delivered in Weymouth and Portland, Great Britain and is designed for those in the position of Training Manager or those who have influence on the future of Training and Development within their MNA.

Run by World Sailing Nominated Experts and industry specialists, the course offers an array of modules which aim to strengthen practical and theoretical needs and aims to equip the candidate with necessary skills to build and maintain a sustainable National Sailing Training Programme.

The Scholarship can be privately funded or fully funded through IOC Olympic Solidarity funding. If you are interested in the Scholarship, or any other World Sailing Development Programmes please email training@isaf.com for further details.
