Breeze on in Melbourne

A cold front moving across southern Victoria has brought chilly autumn-like temps and stronger winds to day three of the Sailing World Cup Melbourne.

Cold westerlies mean plenty of layers for race officials and full length wetsuits for competitors heading out from the St Kilda sailing precinct for the midday session. As of 10:30 local time, racing was schedule to commence on time with the sea-state moderate and 20 knots of WSW wind blowing at the top of Port Phillip.

Starting at midday are the 470s (men’s and women’s), 49er and 49erFX and possibly the 2.4mR and for the invited classes the Laser Radial and 4.7s, Viper, Open Bic and Minnows, Optimists and Libertys are first off St Kilda beach.

The prediction is for winds to dial up to 20-30 knots in the middle of the day and the Principal Race Officers of both the invited and Olympic and Paralympic classes are monitoring the situation and have the option to postpone competition and send competitors back ashore if they deem that a good course of action.

There is a question mark over whether the Para classes will race out of the Royal Yacht Club of Victoria.
