Strong Winds And Waves At OptiWorlds

Buenos Aires had been enjoying a heatwave with temperatures more usual in Summer rather than Spring but during the night a storm came through and intensified during the days racing.

It brought strong winds and plenty of rain. The usual short chop, difficult to manage in the lighter winds, became breaking waves which created problems for many sailors.

After the six qualfiying races in week one, the fleet was divided into Gold, Silver and Bronze with 70 sailors in each. With the wind up to 23 knots their were many changes in the leaderboard with Mara Turin dropping back to 8th place. The new leader is Nicolas Rolaz (SUI) with Dimitris Papadimitriou (GRE) second and Gustavo Abdulklech (BRA) moved into third taking the first win of thee day.

The coach of the Brazilian Team, Filipe Novello told us about the racing day, “The wind was really hard. I supposed Gustavo was going to stay on the first five because is 15 years old and he has lot of experience with this kind of wind. In the first one Gustavo made a good start and he won, then in the second one he didn’t start so good but he recovered.” Gustavo´s parents are here and Filipe told me “It’s good that parents are here, always is good if they are ready to help with anything they need and let the coach do his job”.

The Gold and Silver fleet both had two races with Bronze fleet just having one. There are differing predictions as to the weather conditions for the rest of the week but all will be anticipating another day with at least 2 races but less wind.
