The second day of the Optimist World Championship saw lighter winds as the fleets were held ashore, waiting for the breeze to build. The first race saw the lightest conditions so far with about 8 knots.
The current pushed many sailors, particularly in the yellow fleet, over the line and eventually the race officer used the black flag and many sailors were caught out and had a BFD result for the third race of the series.
Fortunately the breeze began to build and the second race saw about 12 knots and conditions more like the perfect ones of yesterday. The late start and the frequent delays resulted in sailors having a very long day and they finally returned to shore at about 19:00.
With four races completed, the opening day leaders have been replaced by Nicolas Rolaz of Switzerland with an impressive score line of 2 4,3,5, closely followed by Mara Turin of Slovenia – 13,2,2,1. Mara is no stranger to being at the front of the fleet with a second place at the Europeans in 2012, returning in 2013 to take the Girls Championship title.
Racing continues on Friday after which there is a change to the format with the team racing title to be decided.
