An ISAF Level 1 Technical Course for participation related coaches was successfully delivered in Savu, Fiji in September 2014. The eight participants on the course learnt new techniques of teaching or the delivery of participation related sailing during the week long course.
National Sailing Development Officer for Fiji and ISAF Training Scholarship graduate Lewa Rauqeuqe gave this statement on behalf of Yachting Fiji, “The Fiji Yachting Association is once more thankful to our Regional Olympic Committee (ONOC) and ISAF, for helping host another successful Technical Coaching Course in Fiji. It has really helped the federation to continue to grow in the right direction. ISAF Expert Andy Jeffery has really helped us understand the development structure of sailing. As a federation, we need to make changes in order to be successful and to provide a lot of resources to all sailing clubs in Fiji.
“The course taught our coaches that there could be many ways to deliver a certain exercises. It showed them many things that could be useful to teach kids and other upcoming coaches. Fiji Yachting is happy to see the number of coaches grow and participation levels increase rapidly as a result. As a small sailing federation we are trying to reach our goal by the end of the year. So many resources have been available and provided for and we are using that as a tool to grow.
“The ISAF Expert not only helped the coaches of Fiji, but also helped our federation understand their main goal and mission. It has changed since the last time we had taken up the first coaching course delivered by ISAF. With the report from ISAF and the comments that the Expert has left for us, we can be sure next time we are to host another coaching course, we will have improved.
“Fiji yachting has benefited from the ISAF Technical Course in many ways. The connection we have with the International Sailing Federation is slowly growing and it has given our federation an advantage to getting more of our resources improved. These are steps we are looking forward to take more of.”
Andy Jeffrey, ISAF Nominated Expert responsible for delivery of the course spoke of his experience, “It was very rewarding to work with the Fijian candidates on the Level One Technical Course for Coaches held in Suva, as both their enthusiasm for sailing was infectious. Although there were limited training resources available, both the aspirant Coaches and the young sailors who were present throughout the week compensated magnificently to ensure that no opportunity to gain from the experience was missed.
“The Fijian sail training environment is unique and building a national training provision for the 133 islands that make up this country is proving a challenge. All of the candidates approached the course in a positive manner. With these individuals in place, the challenge of building a team capable of delivering a National Training Programme for Fiji should be made easier for the Fiji Yachting Association.”
