The ISAF Performance Training Exercises publication provides a beneficial resource both sailors and coaches with almost 50 pages of practical exercises that can be tailored to meet the needs of all abilities, both as stand–alone activities or as reference material for the delivery of a structured performance training programme.

Enjoyment and fun are primary considerations when choosing an exercise to enhance a sailors’ performance. This is because the more enjoyable the activity, the more receptive students become to learning and improving their skills, especially when they provide recognised outcomes. Promoting a racing-based environment as a fun arena is essential to establishing a sustainable future for the sport.

Fundamental enjoyment is best achieved through the challenge of competing against your nearest rival on the race course, whether competing for a medal position or battling for 106th place in a regatta. Good tactical decisions and effective boat handling are required to catch the boat in front wherever you are in the fleet.

ISAF World Youth Sailing Trust (WYST) Coach and co-author of the publication, Hugh Styles said, “The ISAF Performance Training Exercises resource will allow all of the ISAF supported sailors to come to the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship having a more developed knowledge of the drills (practical exercises) required to work on in their personal training and for information on preparation required for developing their own performance.

“The essence of this resource is that it is providing simple ways to engage with all coaches and their sailors in a fun and enjoyable way. Sailors will be able to teach themselves using these tools during independent practice time afloat, in order to maximise their own learning opportunities. Sailors will also be able to gain more experience from seeing other exercises which they can try in order to extend their skills; pushing their perceived or actual skill boundaries. The common language that this resource gives will be invaluable to sailors and coaches alike, with Coaches being able to use the ISAF Performance Training Exercises as a reference guide or as a way to inspire new ideas.

“This resource is vital for the International Sailing Federation as it is a means to assist in the process of developing standards and ensuring consistent coaching delivery across sailing globally.”

The exercises included in this publication can be tailored for performance training in dinghies, multihulls and small keelboats, along with windsurfing and kite boarding activity.

Upcoming Training Resource titles currently under development include:

•ISAF Beginners Guide to Yachting – Crewing
•ISAF Beginners Guide to Yachting – Navigation
•ISAF Beginners Guide to Yachting – Inshore Skipper

The unique way in which ISAF Member National Authorities can personalise these resources means that ISAF is doing the hard work from which members can benefit. Once MNAs have bought the licence they can create their own resource by:

1.Translating all text
2.Adding MNA Logos and contact details to relevant pages.
3.Including a personalised introduction, specific and relevant to their MNA
4.Changing pictures to include references to ‘home grown’ sailors and champions.
5.Include MNA specific National Pathway information
6.Make use of the 2 pages of potential Sponsorship space included in each book, enabling the federation to sell space to help pay for books.
7.Printing all resources in their country and not paying extra for shipping.
