Aussies Move Into Pole Position At 29er Worlds

Lighter winds from 6-10 knots prevailed on Friday at the 29er Worlds in Kingston, Canada giving some teams a chance to move up in the rankings while some of the heavier teams struggled.

Three teams were consistent to stay at the top with Kurt Hansen & Harry Morton (AUS) sailing a 6-3-8-2 to give them a lead in the 25 boat Gold fleet with 52 points. Sitting in second overall are Tania Bonilla and Marc Chapon (ESP) who had a great day with 8-6-9-3 to give them 63 points. The French team of Brice Yrieix and Loic Ficher-Guillou, fresh off their ISAF Youth Worlds win, are in the hunt but suffered an OCS in the third race. Their other races were 7-2-4 which puts them in fourth overall behind the German team of Jasper Steffens and Tom Lennart Brauckmann who have been very consistent using their last race as their discard.

Saturday’s racing sees two races scheduled with light winds again forecasted. If the scheduled 10 races are met, each team will receive two discards which can change the leader board.

In the silver fleet Argentines Ignacio Varisco and Nicolas Peirano Prat lead with the Bronze leaders the female team of Theresa Blumroth and Maria Berking (GER).

The finals races will be followed immediately by the award ceremonies at Portsmouth Olympic Harbour.
