Austria’s Max Trippolt overcame compatriot Christian Binder in a winner takes all single race final at the ISAF Grade 3 Cleanport Winter Match Race in Izola, Slovenia.
Ten teams contested the opening Round Robin and racing got underway on Saturday 8 February in 5-10 knots of southerly breeze. Thanks to the great work of the Race Committee, umpires, competitors and by returning to shore as twilight kicked in, 12 flights were completed. That’s a great number of matches for a short February day. With three flights of the Round Robin to go on the Sunday, theoretically eight teams could still reach the finals.
A windy and rainy night was forecasted, with conditions improving in the morning. Unfortunately the weather was running late as squalls and 30+ knots gusts battered the race course.
But at 13:00 the wind eased and the rain stopped which meant procedure was signaled from the RC boat. The remaining three flights were completed swiftly and Binder came out on top in the Round Robin.
With time running out it went to a first to one point Petit Final and Final.
Tom Mallindine (GBR) picked up the win over Dejan Presen (SLO) in the Petit Final whilst Trippolt defeated Binder to take top spot.
