Ben Ainslie Ignites Weymouth And Portland's Olympic Flame

Treble Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie (GBR) ignited an Olympic flame caldron at the Weymouth and Portland sailing venue on Saturday.

Olympic sailing athletes, volunteers, staff and media welcomed Ainslie when he arrived at Weymouth and Portland with the lantern. He was practice-racing earlier in the day and will be one of the first competitors on the water on Sunday 29 July when the Finn racing starts the Olympic Sailing Competition.

Ainslie lit the flame from a lantern brought from London 2012’s Opening Ceremony. It will burn from a Portland stone plinth in the Victory Ceremony area, close to the Olympic rings just offshore.

Weymouth and Portland is the only co-host venue to have its own flame during the Games.
