Lone Campaigners Take On The Big Teams

The British, French, USA and New Zealand sailing teams are the largest at the London 2012 Olympic Games sailing in Weymouth and Portland on the English south coast, where 380 sailors from 63 NOCs are competing.

Britain, France, the United States and New Zealand each qualified 16 athletes for the Olympic regatta that begins on 29 July with the first race in the men’s heavyweight Finn Class.

Spain and Sweden are the next largest, both with 14, followed by Australia and Portugal, each with 13.

Croatia and Germany have 12 sailors racing, while Denmark, Finland, Greece, Italy and Netherlands all have 11. Russia has 10.

At the other end of the scale, 12 NOCs each have just one sailor competing at London 2012. They are Chinese Taipei, the Cook Islands, Egypt, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Monaco, Montenegro, Peru, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and Tunisia.
