Lively Conditions At Star Western Hemisphere Championships

The first race of the International Star Class Western Hemisphere Championship 2010 was started in 16 knots of breeze and seas of 3-5 feet with a forecast to build. The triangle-windward-finish-downwind course provided some wild reaching in Montagu Harbour in the Bahamian islands.

As the wind built to 20–25 knots, Canadian’s Richard Clarke and Tyler Bjorn battled to finish day one at the top of the leader board. Clarke and Bjorn placed first and second in the two races sailed on day one. American Augie Diaz and his Brazilian crewmate Bruno Prada were first in race number one, but an eigth place finish in race two set them back to fourth place at the end of day.

Finishing second was the team of George Szabo (USA) and crew Mark Strube (USA) and third was the team of  Mark Mendelblatt (USA) and John Von schwarz (USA). The only Bahamians sailing in this year’s championships, are brothers Mark Holowesko and  William Holowesko who finished day one in 17th position.

Sailing was postponed Wednesday and delayed Thursday due to strong winds. Sailing continues in Montagu Harbour until Saturday.
