Strong winds and rain were expected for the first race day of the ISAF Grade 1 Laser Radial Europeans and the Laser Radial Men’s Worlds in Scheveningen, Netherlands. Defending European Champion Evi VAN ACKER (BEL) had a great start and leads after two races.
Unfortunately the weather gods were not well-inclined and the day started with a drizzle and a nice northeasterly wind. Soon the sun came out and the wind picked up. At approximately 10:00 all 220 Lasers were on the water and the championships began.
European Championship Women
Amongst the women, titleholder VAN ACKER was quick out of the blocks and with a first and a third is leading the fleet after the first day. Alison YOUNG (GBR) started her regatta well too and with a second and fourth she is second overall. In third position Gea BARBIC (CRO) has 1 point more than YOUNG.
World Championship Men
With four Dutch sailors in the first five positions the Dutch men had a terrific start. Due to the wind these strong men were faster than most others. Douwe BROEKENS and Eduardo VAN VIANEN lead on three points (both a first and a second). Mathieu FREI (CAL) is in third place with a fourth and a second. This promises intense racing in the men’s fleet.
The weather forecast for Monday is the same as for today: strong winds and high waves: a beautiful sailing day.
