Golds For Hong Kong And China

Kowk Fai CHENG (HKG) was crowned Mistral World Champion in Shenzhen, China, whilst the hosts swept up all three medal’s in the women’s fleet led by new World Champion Shuijia WANG (CHN).

27 men and 19 women lined up for the 2006 Worlds, with Asian sailors dominating both fleets. China took gold, silver and bronze in the women’s event, with WANG taking the title thanks to a string of five bullets in the final five races. Huali ZHU (CHN) started strongly but faded towards the end, although was still comfortable in silver, whilst Zhenmei QIN (CHN) got the better of a very tight three-way battle for bronze.

Although he only scored one bullet throughout the eleven race series, CHENG never once dropped out of the top five and took the title by a six point margin from team mate King Yin CHAN (HKG). Shifu WU (CHN) was battling for the title right until the final two races, but a 5,3 finish saw him end the regatta in third.
