This is the Centennial Bermuda Race and a great cause for celebration in Newport, Rhode Island, USA, where the race has started since 1936, and at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club (RBYC) on Hamilton Harbour where the race first finished in 1906.
The race from America to Bermuda was first sailed under the authority of the Brooklyn Yacht Club and the RBYC in 1906. Under Commodore Ambrose Gosling, the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club assessed each member £2 sterling to pay for post race parties and sealed the deal. The RBYC and the Cruising Club of America have co-organized the race since 1926.
Racing starts 16 June as an international fleet of racing and cruising yachts sets off again to Bermuda on the centennial thrash to the Onion Patch. The huge fleet will be crossing the finish line off St. David’s Lighthouse as they have since 1906, concluding the 635 mile crossing from Newport, Rhode Island to Bermuda.
