Traditional Dhow Gala Today

As the season for traditional dhow sailing races has gained its momentum, the 4th heat of the Traditional Dhow Sailing Race – 22 feet will be held today at Mina Seyahi off the waters of the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC).

Around 50 dhows are expected to participate in the fourth of the eight heat series before the overall winner is decided which is point based. In particular, with this category race, is the Al Khayour turn buoy which becomes the deciding factor irrespective of the race course.

The distance is approximately 2.5nm from start to the finish buoy including the Al Khayour turn buoy.

Competition in this category is tough especially with the Al Khayour turn buoy. ‘This year’s teams have several youngsters participating and this is a good sign as they are learning about their tradition from a young age’, said Saeed Hareb.

The white sails will raise their sails which billow in the wind to form large white doves on the waters coursing their way to reach the finish in a spectacular display of skill.

‘The well known Al Khayour turn will be the testing point for sailors in this category as the dhows are not renowned for their maneuverability through wind and rough waters’, added Saeed Hareb.

Weather conditions are expected to be favourable and sea swells are expected to decrease considering it has been pretty rough over the last few days.
