2004 US Women|s Sailing Championship - Final Report

The 2004 US Women’s Sailing Championship took place from 11 to 15 October at Kanehoe Yacht Club, Hawaii with eleven teams competing in J24s.

Three races were held on the final day of the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championship. The racing remained tight all day, especially among the top four boats who were separated by five points at the beginning of the day.

Vicki SODARO (San Francisco Yacht Club) was OCS in race 8 but then went onto win the final two races. Joni PALMER (Deep Creek Yacht Club) the 2003 winner and Whitney BESSE (Vineyard Haven Yacht Club) whose grandmother had won this championship in 1946 were in strong competition to be this year’s winner and wound up tied before the discards.

But with strong and consistent finishes throughout the week, Rush Creek Yacht Club’s Kathy IRWIN and her crew were awarded the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Trophy as the 2004 winners of the U.S. Women’s Sailing Championship. Palmer took home second place and Besse, third.
