The final day of the 2004 Mistral World Championship dawned with total cloud cover and an unstable south easterly wind.
The forecast of rain showers proved right.
The race committee called out women and men’s silver group at 14:00, and held them on the water in a hope southerly wind develop.
As it turned out, in vain.
No races was possible before the 16:00 time limit and therefore the results as they stood on the penultimate day are final. Julien BONTEMPS (FRA) is the new men’s World Champion, with Pont (POL) second and Nicolas HUGUET (FRA) third.
Subject to ISAF ratification, the following seven nations have also now qualified for the Windsurfer Men event at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. They are, in alphabetical order, Austria, Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Korea, Mexico, Switzerland and Tunisia. This is the first event in the Sailing competition that Tunisia have qualified for, leading up to Athens in August.
Alessandra SENSINI (ITA) (right) won with two races to spare and takes the 2004 Mistral Women’s World Champion title. Barbara KENDALL (NZL) finished second and Faustine MERRET (FRA) third.
Five more nations have qualified for the Windsurfer Women event and subject to ISAF ratification, they are, in alphabetical order; Cyprus, Hungary, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Tunisia.
