Australia's Glenn ASHBY made a strong start to the New Zealand A division catamaran yachting championships sailed off Port Taranaki on Friday.

Australia’s Glenn ASHBY made a strong start to the New Zealand A division catamaran yachting championships sailed off Port Taranaki on Friday.
Ashby finished third in the opening race, then won the second to be leading after day one of the championships which finish on Monday before the World Championship, at the same venue.
Fellow Australian David Brewer is second overall after a second and a third, with New Zealand’s Mike Drummond third after a win in the opening race and a fifth.
New Zealand’s Murray PHILPOTT was the big improver in the second race. After a sixth in race one, Philpott finished strongly with a second in race two to improve top fourth overall.
