Bora Stops Racing in Italian Paradise

Following the opening ceremony and practice races over the weekend, the first races in the championship were due to be held yesterday. The Wind, however, had other ideas and a 40 knot Bora has put paid to racing both yesterday and today.

Being held from the purpose built marina town of Porto San Rocco, in the Bay of Trieste on the Adriatic, the 53 competitors from 6 nations have been forced to sit and watch the 40 knot Bora wind blow it’s hardest.

Porto San Rocco is fast becoming one of Italy’s most popular tourist resorts. The Old Port of San Rocco, the site of thriving ship building and a port, declined along with that trade in the area, and following huge investment, the developement of the area into a prime marina and tourist location has been faithful and sympathetic to the natural style of the area.

The area is once again thriving, and organisation of the J/22 World Championship was entrusted by the Italian Sailing Federation to both the Società Velica Barcola e Grignano and to the Porto San Rocco Yacht Club.

So far an amazing atmosphere and warm welcome has been extended to all competitors at the championship, and once the Bora drops, racing is sure to be frenetic and close. Racing is due to continue until Sunday.
