Following the four day, nine race series in Hyeres, it came down to the wire for the 15 boats competing in the Farr 40 Continental Championship.
Three nations fought over the title, which in the end went to the boat that led after the first day of racing. After a moderate first day of 12-17 knots, it was Wolfgang SCHAEFER’S Struntje Light who led with a consistent scoreline of 2, 3, 4 in the three races sailed on the first day.
The breeze kicked in for the second day of racing last Friday and Struntje would have seen her first race win of the regatta in the first ravce of the day had it not been for Lang WALKER’s Kokomo surfing past in the dying seconds of the race.
Following a postponement until later on in the afternoon for a storm front to pass, races five and six of the regatta were sailed in light and shifty conditions to really test the diversity of the crew’s. Victric 5, Tony DEMULDER (GBR) sailed a blinding two races, scoring two bullets and lifting themselves up the scoreboard.
From that moment on however it was Schaefer who dominated with a consistent approach, which eventually won him the regatta without actually winning a single race in the series. Peter De RIDDER’s Mean Machine was second with Victric 5 finishing in the bronze medal position.
