Racing got underway at the World Championship in Athens at 1200 local time yesterday for the two classes, the Sonar keelboat and the single person 2.4mR. Two races were sailed.
The two classes of 21 Sonars and 36 2.4 mR’s see many former Paralympic and World Champions battling it out in this pre-Olympic year prior to the Paralympic Games in Athens next year.
In the light and shifty conditions and atypical rain that was experienced by competitors on the first day of racing it was the British Trio of John ROBERTSON, Steven THOMAS and Hannah STODEL who dominated, scoring a first and a second. Two fifth places today however have dropped them to second overall, their reign at the top having been taken over by Udo HESSELS (NED) and his Dutch crew.
In the 2.4mR class, Heiko KROGER (GER), reigning World IFDS World and 2.4 Paralympic Champion had a shocker on day one it the tough conditions and finished with a fifteenth and a third in yesterday’s racing. However, two first places today showed that it’s counters that matter, and he is now second behind Thierry SCHMITTER (NED) finishing the Dutch dominance of the first two days of racing.
Racing continues until 12 September with a lay-day tomorrow, full results can be found on the event website at the address below.
