All day Friday the Rolex Fastnet Race fleet continued to stream over the finish line off Plymouth, with 111 boats finishing in one 12 hour period.
The first Class 2 boat was Jeronimo, Jonathan and Lisa GORING’s J-109, that managed to stay in one weather system, with a good North Easterly 10 – 12 kt breeze, for most of the trip across the Celtic Sea, finishing eight hours ahead of the next boat in their class.
Most of the Class 3 boats were still racing as of Friday afternoon, with five boats finished by midday and the rest of the fleet expected to arrive in Plymouth throughout Saturday. Only eleven boats in the fleet have retired to date, out of the original 245 starters.
The prizegiving is at 17:00 today at the Royal Citadel in Plymouth where prizes for class and overall winners will be awarded. Charles DUNSTONE’s Nokia Connecting People, was Best Overall under IRC for the Fastnet Challenge Cup, while Mike Slade on Leopard won Best Overall under IRM for the Fastnet Rock Trophy. Both winners will be awarded a Rolex Yachtmaster Rolesium for their efforts.
