Light Winds on First Day of Finals
With a planned start at 12.00 hrs and an easterly wind that was expected to disappear completely, the Race Committee decided to wait a while for the new wind.
With a planned start at 12.00 hrs and an easterly wind that was expected to disappear completely, the Race Committee decided to wait a while for the new wind.
The first wind came from SSW at about 12:30 (local time). The Race Committee sailed out to lay their course and was able to start the Senior Gold fleet about two hours later. A few minutes after the start, the wind shifted 30 degrees to the west and the Youth goldfleet start was postponed.
The Seniors had sailed about 70% of the first leg when the wind shifted another 50 degrees to the west and bringing fresh gusts to the race area. The race was abandoned and the course laid again.
Based on his local knowledge and experience Race Officer Tonko PETESIC expected this wind to stay long enough to sail the gold fleet races.
Unfortunately the wind started to shift slowly back and died rather quick. The races from both the Senior and the Junior Gold fleet were shortened at the outer gate and before all boats were finished, the Silver fleets were sent home by the race committee that did not expect any wind at all that day.
With only one day to go and the first 4 sailors only 6 points separated, tomorrow can bring lots of surprises
