Three races were sailed on day 2 of the Optimist Worlds, the first in around 8 knots and the other two in 10-12 knots.
The “unknown” Greg CAREY (GBR) proved that his first day lead was not due to chance with placings of 1-8-10 on day 2. Defending champion Filip MATIKA (CRO) registered two wins, slipped up in the third race to score 23, but nevertheless improved his overall ranking to 4th. Best results of the day came from Sweden Nicklas DACKHAMMAR who now lies in second place.
Several of the other favourites also had a good day. The silver medalists from the two American championships, Sebastian Peri BRUSA (ARG) and Jesse KIRKLAND (BER) now lie 7th and 8th. Local 2002 European boys champion Joaquin Blanco can expect to rise on the leaderboard when the first discard is taken after Race 6.
Among the girls Hannah MILLS (GBR) was black-flagged in Race 4 and will also await the discard to challenge the current leader, 2002 European girls champion Alessandra FERLICH (ITA).
Good results from the less fancied countries included fourth and third from Guney Can KAPTAN of Turkey and second places from William DOUGLAS of Barbados and Adrian HERNANDEZ of Puerto Rico.
