Stormy Conditions on Day Three
On Day three the sailors were faced with yet another stormy morning and the Race Committee took the decision to postpone racing. Around midday the wind calmed down so the fleet sailed out.
The weather favoured the Ukrainian PITCHUGIN, who lead the race from the first upwind mark to win full of confidence. In the second downwind section the north-westerly wind strengthened again making the race more difficult for the sailors because of the strong pressures, as is typical at Lake Balaton. Sometimes it’s strength reached Force 7.
Ten boats had no choice but to retire, including series leader WINKLER (GER)who suffered damage to his jib halyard
Finally PITCHUGIN (UKR) won race 5, Balázs GYENESE (HUN) finished second, and AUTERID (AUT)third.
WINKLER still leads overall, but with equal points in front of PITCHUGIN, the Austrian boat (AUTERID) is in third position, and the best Hungarian team, led by Balázs GYENDESE is lying in fourth.
Sergey Pitchugin gave his impressions of the day
I’m very happy, that the Race Committee decided to start the today’s race. It’s very very important. It’s a World Championship and for the International Soling Class it’s very essential to sail between every wind condition. We’re not thinking about, in what kind of wind conditions we have to race, it can be any kind of during a race and the good result is the most important thing between any conditions.
