In Palma Yesterday, Sailors awoke to find uncharacteristic mist and light winds at the ISAF graded regatta. Only four of the eleven Olympic disciplines achieved racing in difficult conditions.
The Europe, 470 men and women, and Finn completed an entire race with the 49er group A completing one flight. Racing in the Star class was started but later abandoned. 6-10 knot south-westerlies were the order of the day across the bay.
Gabrio Zandona and Andrea Trani (ITA) won race one in their group in the 470 men’s fleet along with Javier Conte and Juan de la Fuente (ARG) with Nathan Wilmot and Malcom Page (AUS), current leaders in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings, were second in the first race and are currently joint second. The 470 Fleet will sail a series of qualifying races finishing tomorrow, before the final races on the last two days of the regatta.
In the Women’s fleet, Natalia Via Dufresne and Sandra Azon (ESP), winners of last years Princess Sofiia, started as they mean to go on by winning race one.
The Europe class completed a full flight of group races yesterday and is currently being led by Serena Amato (ARG), bronze medallist in Sydney 2000, and nominee for the ISAF Rolex World Sailor of the Year Award in 2000. This fleet will also sail group races until Thursday, when the finals start. The other flight winner was Sarah Macky (NZL).
The Finn class also completed a race in the light and choppy conditions yesterday, current event leader is Gasper Vincec (CRO).
